The history of Valentine’s Day…

The main reason for celebrating Valentine’s Day is still not clear but there are many theories behind it. The origin is also a mystery but historians have agreed that it was celebrated thousands of years before.

Before Valentine’s Day, there was a Roman festival called Lupercalia. In this day men choose a woman’s name from a box randomly and they would later pair off, these couples often led to marriage. This day also involved a goat sacrifice. And that is not all, after sacrificing the goat, naked men would whip women with the remaining of the blood-soaked goat. Why? To improve their fertility. Romantic, isn’t it?

The story of St Valentine…

Who was St Valentine?

According to some theories St Valentine may or may not be more than one man.

In one story, St Valentine was officially recognised by the Roman Catholic Church as a real person who died around AD 270. He was the roman Priest who used to help couples get married secretly. When Rome Emperor Claudius II outlawed to stop the Roman soldier to get married to make them stronger, St Valentine saw this as an injustice. So, later he broke the rules and begun to help these soldiers get married in secret Christian ceremony. And this act of kindness gave him the reputation as the man who values the importance of love.

But soon, Valentines was found guilty and was thrown into jail and was finally beheaded by the Emperor.

In another theory, St Valentine was a Bishop who was killed by Emperor Claudius II at the same time. The similarities between the Bishop’s and Priest’s stories often led to confusion that they may have been the same man.

Bishop Valentine also helped people to get married secrete, which resulted in his death on the outskirts of Rome. Even though he was suffering from epilepsy, plague and fainting from travelling but that didn’t stop people to reach out to him for help.

Legend has it that when Saint Valentine was in jail he was in love with a young girl. And For the last time, he wrote a letter to his beloved and signed it as “From Your Valentine”. It is said that because of this person sent love letters and cards till this day.

Well, according to historians, Valentine’s Day is a changed version of Roman Festival Lupercalia. Valentine’s Day Nowadays:

It is safe to say now that Valentine’s sacrifice did not go to waste. Because of his compassion, we have a day full of love and affection. Even though, it has become far more commercial than before. All over the world, little shops become full with chocolate boxes, teddy bears and gift cards with little X’s and O’s. All of them now have become a symbol of adoration and affection.

And all of these often make people feel nervous to celebrate this day. Because everyone is doing special things to make their partner feel loved. Don’t worry; we’ve got that cover for you too.

Enough with the history, now let’s talk about how we could celebrate Valentine’s this year…

Make Dinner – Forget about going out for a fancy dinner date. Instead, having a personal date is much better. A recipe of own choice which you made is more romantic, plus maintains privacy. Imagine the closeness you both will have when you make it into a candlelight dinner.

Plan a Surprise – Surprise them with a party or a concert ticket to a surprise outing for a picnic. Don’t be afraid to try something new create a moment for a lifetime, they will appreciate your effort.

Choose an Activity of Their Liking – If they are adventurous, skydiving, underwater diving or cruising is the best option. Basically, do the stuff you usually don’t do, it will be a great way to show your love and attention.

Make Them a DIY Gift – I know this sounds childish, but it works all time. Put together some of their photos and make them collages or decorative albums. Also, you can gift them those little love coupons, a painting made by you and even a self-made diary or notebook is a great idea.

It doesn’t matter how dark the history of St. Valentine’s Day was, it still stands as the day to show and feel loved. So, don’t miss out to bring out the moment with your partner.
