The International Youth Day is celebrated on 12th August every year. It is an initiative to celebrate and promote voices of the youth and the actions taken by them which impact global engagements. Generally, this day is celebrated in a podcast style which holds discussions and is hosted by the youth of respective places all over the country for the youth to speak out and deliver their thoughts. International Youth Day is dedicated to recognise and spread awareness about the importance of youth to participate actively in political economic and social life processes.

International Youth Day Theme of 2020: Youth Engagement for Global Action

This year the theme is focused on “Youth Engagement For Global Action.” Young people have a new vision to life, a different understanding which can bring a new flow of change in the world.

The attention is drawn towards how, through the years, the participation of young people at the local, national and global level has benefited the national institutions and processes. The topic of how their participation and active engagement in institutional politics should be enhanced will also be discussed.

History of International Youth Day

The idea of celebrating the international day for youth was first suggested in 1991 by the youngsters from Vienna and Austria. They were attending the first conference of the UN’s World Youth Council. An International Youth Day was suggested to be celebrated for crowdsourcing and promotional activities bring back in action the United Nation Youth fund.

In August 1998, in the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, Lisbon authenticated the proposal. In 1999, the UN General Assembly decided the date 12th August as International Youth Day. The first International Day for Youth was celebrated in the year 2000.

Ways to celebrate International Youth Day 2020

  • Spreading the awareness and message doesn’t always have to be like a lesson, it is important to make it fun and something relatable. Use whatever contact you have to spread the message and usefulness of International Youth Day.
  • Make arrangements for an educational radio show. You can contact your local or national radio stations to save a slot for discussions with distinguished young individuals.
  • Keeping in mind the pandemic, a virtual debate over a Zoom call can be organised to discuss the contribution of the youth to global issues.
  • Discussion between adults and young people can smoothen the intergenerational understanding.
  • A seminar can be conducted to provide a safe space for the exchange of ideas among young people from different cultural backgrounds which can help them to accept each other and promote non-violence.
  • A virtual concert to promote international Youth Day is not a bad idea. Young local musicians and bands would be more than happy to participate. The keynote speech could be assigned to a local politician or policymaker.
  • If it hasn’t for the lockdown, there would have been a chance to organise an exhibition to portray the challenges faced by young people or how they are doing their bit towards development. It would have been better to involve as many young people as you want from the domain of culture, music arts, etc.

What will be really impactful is if anyhow the condition and challenges faced by the youth can reach to the Minister of youth with some suggested solution.
